Canadians Compete at 2017 Congressional Cup Invitational
March 27, 2017 - Three CBTF athletes competed at the recent Congressional Cup 2017 Invitational competition held at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
The Congressional Cup Invitational brings together the best twirlers representing different organizations (CBTF, CNBTA, USTA and NBTA) in a single all-around competition. The Invitational competition combines Solo, 2-Baton and Freestyle events to determine an all-around ranking.
The CBTF athletes competing in the Invitational were:
- Sophie Lightheart, Sundown Optimist Buffalo Gals, Regina
- Jasmine Runge, Sundown Optimist Buffalo Gals, Regina
- Julee Stewart, Sundown Optimist Buffalo Gals, Regina
In addition to those athletes invited to represent CBTF, three other Canadian athletes were invited as the CNBTA representatives:
- Cassidy Doherty, Camaros, Oshawa
- Mackenzie Ross, Camaros, Oshawa
- Megan Ward, Stars United, Aurora
Deardra Leslie (pictured below, with Jasmine and Julee after the awards ceremony) was invited to judge at the competition.
Men and Women compete in separate divisions. There are no age divisions in the Invitational. In the Women's Preliminary Round competition, Canada's highest placing athletes were:
- Julee Stewart finished 5th in Solo
- Jasmine Runge and Julee Stewart tied for 1st in 2-Baton
- Julee Stewart finished 1st in Freestyle
- Julee Stewart finished 1st in the overall standings
Julee Stewart and Jasmine Runge both placed in the Top 5 overall and advanced to compete in the Women's Final Round. In the overall rankings of that Final Round:
- Julee Stewart finished 2nd
- Jasmine Runge finished 4th
